Hydrogen
Hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are predicted to experience the strongest growth over the next decade in the low-carbon supply chain.
NewEra plans to be the first significant producer of low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen in Argentina.
Projects overview
- Gasify bitumen from the Company’s project areas to produce synthesis gas (“syngas”).
- Separate carbon-negative hydrogen (H2) from syngas.
- The "blue hydrogen" is available for different applications:
- generate electricity in H2 fuel cells.
- use as clean energy in transportation.
- manufacture of chemicals, e.g. ammonia and methanol.
- A vanadium-rich ash is produced as a by-product.

Key points of the processing flowsheet:
- NewEra has identified a patented gasification flow sheet with a modelled potential yield of 120 kg H2 per tonne of bitumen.
- Chemical free processing solution with complete CO2 capture.
- Carbon dioxide is mineralised in a brine solution, dried and is then ready for utilisation.
- Modular, scalable self-sustaining plant (no external power source required).
- Small environmental footprint.
- Processing technology offers the flexibility and advantage to vary the proportion of energy products produced (electricity, hydrogen) according to market prices.
